One of the ways that Nikkatsu searched for and recruited new actors and actresses was to hold yearly “New Face” talent contests. Nikkatsu made flyers advertising the contests and the requirements for application. Durning the Roman Porno era women hoping for a movie role auditioned while wearing bikinis. From what little I could translate and see from the magazine articles the selected contestants paraded in front of various judges and went though a question and answer session. In the second round they removed their tops to judged on their physical qualifications. As you can see in some of the magazine photos a contestant or two would try to impress the judges by removing everything. Not only could aspiring amateurs try out but one article also shows professional strippers competing for a chance. I am sure the various articles explain what’s going on but I could not find much about these contests in English. If you look carefully you might recognize a few contestants who actually did manage to land a movie role.
