About This Blog

Welcome to my collection of promotional materials for Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno series of movies. Each blog entry represents one film and has whatever items I have found that relate to that movie. If you go by the date of my last blog entry it doesn’t look like much is happening. But behind the scenes I am continually finding new material and adding these to the existing blog entries. Click on the What's New heading in the sidebar to see what new items I have added.

Consider this blog a work in progress. I do this for my own amusement so the information presented here is my own interpretation.

A blog is a somewhat awkward format to showcase such a large collection of movies (over 1100) but I have offered several ways to look around. There is a movie title index, a gallery of posters grouped by year of release and a list of common fetishes to search through. I also have an index of actresses with pictures (when I could find them) with their Nikkatsu filmography.

Nikkatsu promoted their films and actresses in newspapers, magazines, books and records. Their films played in Nikkatsu owned theaters and used various posters, lobby cards and movie stills to advertise each new release. Ads and catalogs offered their theatrical films for private home viewing in 8mm film, VHS and high definition Laserdisc. Also edited movie soundtracks were sold on 8 track and cassette audio tape.

They also offered numerous direct-to-video movies. These were made with the same directors and actresses used in their theatrical productions but were lower budget films that usually ran for around 30 minutes. Under their logo Nikkatsu sold VHS's of edited pink movies produced by other studios and various hard and soft core foreign imports from Europe and the US.

Below are some examples of what Nikkatsu produced to promote their films. Not all of these materials were used for each movie. For example trading cards, calendar cards and telephone cards only started to show up in the 1980’s. The sizes listed for these items are approximate.

Anatomy of a B4 poster

The back side of the poster contained information about the movie and graphic elements that the press could use to create ads and articles for newspapers and magazines. The design on the back evolved over the years but share these common elements.

Section A - A listing of the crew with names and titles.

Section B - A listing of the cast with the actors name and their character name.

Section C - Commentary and or information about the movie.

Section D - The storyline of the movie.

Section E - A selection of teaser advertising copy that can be used in an ad.

Section F - The preferred format for the listing of the actors names.

Section G - Advertising text for use in ads and articles.

Section H - Two strips of logos used to border the outside edges of ads. One stripe has Nikkatsu logos running horizontally and the other runs vertically.

Section I - A selection of logos in various sizes and orientations. This example has just black on white logotypes but later B4’s included white on black logotypes as well.

Due to growing public outrage in the early 80's of the exposed breasts in Nikkatsu's posters and photos that were displayed outside their theaters restrictions were placed on what could and could not be shown. Exposed nipples were now not allowed to be shown and depictions of violent content were toned down. Posters and photos now carried a new seal of approval, the small round logo.

The second series showed pictures of the actresses from various scenes.
