During the Roman Porno era Nikkatsu searched for new talent by staging yearly(?) talent contests for women who were willing to work in their films. Unlike a regular beauty contest you would be expected to model topless in front of judges. From what little I could see from the magazine articles the selected contestants would parade in front of various judges in bikinis and go through a question and answer session. At some point the contestants would remove their tops to be judged on their physical qualifications. As you can see in some of the magazine photos a few contestants would try to impress the judges by removing everything. Not only could aspiring amateurs try out but one article shows professional strippers competing for a chance. If you look carefully you might recognize a few contestants who actually did manage to land a movie role.

Recruiting new Nikkatsu Actresses
At Nikkatsu, in order to bring a new style to Roman Porno, we are currently
recruiting new actresses as per the following guidelines.
Qualifications:
Women over the age of 18 who can appear in hot romantic porn (both amateurs
and professionals). Must be able to travel to Nikkatsu Studio.
Application method:
Sent resume and photos with measurements to the Nikkatsu Studio Advertising Department, New Actress Section by the deadline of June 10th 1982.
After document screening, we will notify you of the interview test.
Examination method:
1st screening - document selection.
2nd screening - district examinations (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo).
Final judging - Tokyo
Prize money and supplementary prizes (Weekly Playboy Award):
1st place - 2 million yen prize for 1 person / Extra prize - overseas trip.
2nd place - 500,000 yen each for 2 people / Extra prize - overseas trip.
Prize winners - a few people (3rd place?) / overseas trip.
